چکیده

T uberculous pericarditis continues to have a high incidence in developing countries. Despite effective antimicrobial treatment and improved public health in developed countries, there has been a recent surge in the incidence of both atypical and classical tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients, especially those infected with HIV. Only a few studies have been published describing the echocardiographic features of tuberculous pericardial effusion, especially with reference to echocardiographic intrapericardial abnormalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the echocardiographic features of tuberculous pericardial effusion and assess the diagnostic and prognostic usefulness of echocardiographic intrapericardial abnormalities in distinguishing between patients with tuberculous pericardial effusion and idiopathic/viral pericardial effusion, which has not been previously studied.

Large pericardial effusion: the differentiation of tuberculous from chronic idiopathic effusion.

AIMS Tuberculosis is a common cause of pericardial effusion in many parts of the world often presenting with tamponade. Its recognition is important but not always easy. This study was to prospectively compare the features of tuberculous with chronic idiopathic pericardial effusion. METHODOLOGY We studied 47 patients with large pericardial effusions or tamponade. All had pericardiocentesis an...

Tuberculous Pericarditis Causing Severe Pericardial Effusion: A Case Study

Aims Tuberculous pericarditis is present in only one to two percent of the tuberculosis cases, i.e. considered rare. The disease is responsible for 4% and 7% of acute pericarditis and cardiac tamponade cases, respectively. Moreover, these conditions are associated with hazardous side effects. Thus, timely and precise diagnosis of the disease could prevent such complications. Case report We rep...

Video-assisted pericardioscopy. How to improve diagnostic efficacy in pericardial effusions.

OBJECTIVE To assess, in a prospective way, the experience with video-assisted pericardioscopy obtained in patients with pericardial effusion of unclear etiology in the preoperative period. METHODS From January 1998 to June 2000, 20 patients were operated upon with the aid of video-assisted pericardioscopy. On echocardiography, 17 of these patients had significant pericardial effusion, and 3 h...

Diagnosis and management of pericardial effusion.

Pericardial effusion is a common finding in everyday clinical practice. The first challenge to the clinician is to try to establish an etiologic diagnosis. Sometimes, the pericardial effusion can be easily related to a known underlying disease, such as acute myocardial infarction, cardiac surgery, end-stage renal disease or widespread metastatic neoplasm. When no obvious cause is apparent, some...
